I am a Promise!

I am a promise
I am a possibility
I am a promise with a capital “P”
I am a great big bundle of potentiality
And I am learnin’ to hear God’s voice
And I am tryin’ to make the right choice
I am a promise to be anything God wants me to be.

I can go anywhere that He wants me to go
I can be anything He wants me to be
I can climb the high mountains
I can cross the wide sea
I’m a great big promise you see!

I am a promise
I am a possibility
I am a promise with a capital “P”
I am a great big bundle of potentiality
And I am learnin’ to hear God’s voice
And I am tryin’ to make the right choice
I’m a promise to be anything God wants me to be
Anything God wants me to be!

--- Bill and Gloria Gaither

I was coming home from work the other day and heard that song on the radio. It is one I remember so well from my childhood. I have always thought of it as a "kid's song", but for some reason the song has been stuck in my head for days now and the longer it is running the more I have been realizing that the lyrics apply to adults too. Even as a grown up, I have promise, possibility and potential to use my talents and skills to serve God. I still am learning to hear God's voice and trying to make the right choices. I can't say I always am successful, but I still have promise!

Lord, please help me to remember that in midst of the stresses and failures of life You see those things in me even if I don't.

34 years and counting ....

This past Wednesday, July 21st, Mom announced that it was the 34th anniversary of our arrival in Haiti as a family in 1976. Dad's response was "Really?" I think they are really feeling it this past year. It got me thinking about my memories of that trip. I had just turned four in March and Amy was just under three months old. We flew in on a Missionary Flights International (MFI) plane. It wasn't one of the big planes, maybe a nine-passenger. I remember the barrels with our belongings being loaded on the plane and then my memory is of something being put in the nose of the plane, behind the propeller. I guess there must be some kind of small compartment or maybe they were just doing the pre-flight checks. We were the only ones on the plane besides our pilot. In fact, Dad (who is NOT a pilot) sat in the co-captain's seat. I don't remember much about the flight itself, but I do recall landing in Port-au-Prince. Grandma and Grandpa Schmid met us at the airport. Grandpa actually came across the tarmac to the plane to greet us. In those days there was an open observation deck that overlooked the tarmac. Grandma was up there waving and shouting that Grandpa was supposed to have waited for her so she could come too! It was the start of a grand adventure. As challenging as life in Haiti has become over the years, I don't think anyone in our family has any regrets that Haiti has been a part of our journey.

Mission statement

Ok, so maybe that is a little strong, purpose statement might be better. This blog is mostly for me, but if family and friends are interested in my random thoughts I guess that is a good thing too. I was never very good at the diary thing so this won't be a really active blog. I hope you enjoy a peek into .... well, me!
